How Long Does It Take to Learn Mandarin?
Mandarin has a reputation for being hard. Some parts are harder than European languages, and some parts are easier. Here is a realistic picture for English speakers.
The honest answer
The US Foreign Service Institute places Mandarin among the hardest languages for English speakers, at around 2,200 hours of study to reach a professional working level. But you do not need that level to enjoy Mandarin. Simple conversations come much sooner.
What to expect with one lesson a week and some practice
After a few weeks
greetings, pinyin and the four tones.
After three months
introduce yourself, use numbers, ask simple questions.
After six months
order food, go shopping, and talk about your day in simple sentences.
After a year
longer conversations, and reading a few hundred characters.
What makes Mandarin easier than you expect
Grammar is simple in many ways. Verbs do not change for past, present or future. There are no plurals and no masculine or feminine words. Many words are built from shorter words you already know.
What makes it harder
Tones take time to hear and say correctly, and characters take steady practice to remember. Speaking out loud with a teacher helps with both.
